Prairie Mills uses a select group of growers. These growers are responsible for supplying our mills with a type of grain that is not common to most elevators. Months before planting season begins, discussions with farmers about the various needs of our mills must occur. These discussions include topics such as: genetics, hybrid corns and the various qualities the crop has or does not have and specifically quality issues regarding the grain.
Besides agronomic issues, discussions also include grain handling and storage. Damaged grain makes poor products for our customers, and we work with growers to sort out better ways to handle grain to prevent damage. Farmers have many challenges and choices in this era of production. It is vital that we work closely with our farmers throughout the year, and also spend time assessing where new opportunities as well as hazards might lie in upcoming seasons and months.
